ABOUT LATIN2U
For generations, the main activity in San Francisco del Rincón, affectionately known as “San
Pancho,” has been the making of straw hats. In times past, the women of the town would gather
to talk and weave these hats. Thanks to the strong local spirit of innovation and creativity, this
tradition has evolved, giving rise to hats made from a wide variety of materials, colors, textures,
and styles. Although a bit more mechanized, today the manufacturing process is still
predominantly handmade.
In 1970, a young artist named Gustavo Gordillo created a painting that symbolized the essence
of San Pancho, asking his friend Juan García Regalado to pose as a model for his work. Thus,
the iconic painting “El Tejedor” was born.
At the age of 28, Gustavo gathered the courage to request an audience with the municipal
president at the time, Domingo Velázquez, with the aim of selling him one of his paintings.
Señor Velázquez bought the now iconic painting, which symbolized San Pancho, “El Tejedor.”
Señor Velázquez gifted the painting to the city and hung it in the City Hall, where it remains to
this day. “El Tejedor” has become a significant representation of San Pancho, to the point where
many people have a replica of this beautiful painting in their homes.

Domingo Velázquez, the grandfather of our founder Liliana Velazquez, played a pivotal role in our story. When Liliana discovered the story behind the now-famous weaver’s painting, she was immediately inspired to collaborate with the artisans of her city, aiming to showcase an amazingly rich assortment of artisanal skills. This passion led to the creation of Latin2u.
Today, San Francisco del Rincón, affectionately known as “The City of the Hat,” boasts over 200 skilled hat manufacturers.
